5 Ways to Make Your Laundry Room More Functional

 Laundry Basket on wood floors

Doing laundry is a daunting task; just as quickly as clothes are folded and put away, do they end up back in a pile waiting to be cleaned. We spend countless hours washing, drying, and folding—sequestered to our laundry room. But with all this hard work, the question begs: shouldn’t your laundry room be working just as hard?

While doing laundry isn’t our favorite chore, it’s certainly necessary (unless you plan on rocking your birthday suit). And, with that in mind, we’ve put together 5 ways to make your laundry room more functional.

  1. Shelving – What makes a great laundry room? Is it quality machines? Ample storage? Someone bound there, willing & eager to wash your clothes? (We wish!) A key element to making the most of your laundry room is good, sturdy shelving. Shelving that can not only withstand the weight of detergent bottles but can also bare baskets for lost socks, sewing supplies, and drier sheets. We are personal fans of open-shelving here, as we feel it makes everything easier and more accessible. Consider investing in refillable glass jugs (for detergent), decorative baskets, and uniform jars to keep your shelves visually appealing and the space feeling pleasant!
  2. Hanging Rod – As easy as it is to toss everything into the dryer without worry, we know that some items must be hung. Installing a hanging rod in your laundry room makes the space more functional for those air-dry only pieces of clothes. With this in place, you’ll be able to quickly hang clothes just as quickly as you toss them into the machine.
  3. Displays pull out drying wrack that's mounted on a wall.

  4. Drying Rack – In our many years of experience with laundry, we’ve learned that a vital way to make your laundry room more functional is to have a great drying rack. But, as vital as it is, it’s also important to consider how much room you have, too. Believe it or not, there are several varieties: overhead, expandable, & fold-down. Choose a drying rack that will fit your laundry room (when expanded) and is durable in material, as some items can become heavy.
  5. Hamper – Invest in a good hamper! These days, there are a variety of hamper types, sizes, and styles, that can all fit your lifestyle and functionality. We recommend hampers that are on caster wheels, so there’s no need for heavy lifting! Consider hampers that can be neatly tucked under countertops or stowed away in built-ins. Additionally, consider hampers that do the sorting for you—darks from lights, his from hers, or towels from clothes! If your hamper is visible, you may want a hamper that’s more aesthetically appealing and decorative. Not only will it look better, but it also may help with keeping clothes off the floor, too (although, we’re not making any promises there)!
  6. ironing board that pulls out of cabinet drawer

  7. Ironing Board – Just like doing laundry, most of us don’t enjoy ironing, But, in the same token, most of us don’t enjoy wearing wrinkled clothes, either. If you’re not limited to size, having an ironing station is a great addition to your laundry room. If you’re fortunate to live in a vintage home where the ironing board easily folds down, consider yourself lucky! But, if you’re not as fortunate, there are many wall-mounted units that can be installed for the same purpose. If wall space isn’t available, consider a pullout drawer ironing board, such as the ones available by Hafele. With either option, it’s important to keep in mind the proximity of an electrical outlet for your iron!
