DBS’ Fishkill Bathrooms! – Pt. 2

The moment we’ve all been waiting for – Part two of our Fishkill bathroom blog! We had originally planned on setting this one out to sail last week, but unfortunately it would have ended up like the Titanic if we did so. Nemo wasn’t very friendly to the Northeast! We’ll just jump right into it and start with one of the biggest issues families run into with their current bathroom and when remodeling, can really be expanded: storage.

Ample storage can be difficult when your bathroom is on the smaller side, and even sometimes when it’s big! The trick is to keep a open feel and not clutter the room. There are a few smaller options when remodeling, to get the most storage for your money. One big option to really optimize for space is your vanity selection and/or cabinets. Choose a vanity with plenty of drawer and counter space. A few other options for added storage could be a medicine cabinet with mirrored faces, or a toilet tank topper that is large. What about using some space from another room and constructing a small linen closet? Keep in mind that this is feasible as long as you don’t mind losing space in the room over. Knocking out a wall to give you that extra bit of room that you are looking for can be a huge help! As we had mentioned before as well, switching from a bathtub to a shower stall could really provide you with some extra useable space in your bathroom.

Your fixture style choices can really your bathroom pop! Don’t you want it to be the envy of your friends and family? Your bathroom may be the only place in your home that you have alone time, so why not build the most relaxing bathroom imaginable? Faucets, handles, lighting, showerhead, racks… right down to the handles on the doors of your storage units and your doorknob! They are not things that you would normally spend too much time on, but they can absolutely alter the way that you feel about your space. Finishes (brass, bronze, copper, etc.) make a big difference and normally, should be consistent throughout – but that’s your decision to make! The remodeler that you are working with might recommend you to a retailer where you can make your selections in their showroom and this will be communicated to your contractor. One thing to really keep in mind is the room, spacing, and code requirements of the space in your home. A few things to also choose styles for are toilets, style of showerhead, sinks (trough, vessel bowl, under mount, etc.), etc.

Now, let’s move onto your bathroom floor!

This tends to be a big deal for most homeowners. Like fixtures, it can change the entire look and feel of your space. A tile floor, when wet, could be treacherous! I know that slipping and falling is not one of my favorite past times, and I’m sure it’s not one of your either. Of course, we also all would like a job well done, meaning our contractor leaves the tiles clean and shiny, looking brand spankin’ new, but we don’t like a visit to the emergency room! Some companies do make a non-slip tile to use on your floor. Also, utilizing fashionable bathmats can be a good alternative, as well as gain you points on the style scale. A nice feature that we are seeing more of is radiant heating in the floor, which allows the floor to warm, so you can ditch the slippers and walk barefoot on your new tile. It also allows you to expose the tile more instead of covering it up with floor mats, but still beware of the slip factor. Whether you use cables or tubing in the floor, the methods of installing electric and radiant systems in floors are similar. There is nothing worse than a cold, hard, tile floor on your bare feet!

Speaking of heat, an easy way to keep your bathroom nice and toasty is to install a kick space heater under the vanity, and/or heat lamps in the ceiling! They both tend to work great, and really do keep you toasty!

Now for the practical stuff! The bathroom needs an exhaust fan, whether it be manual or on a timer. I know what you’re thinking – “a fan on a TIMER?! What could be better?!” It is simply brilliant. The exhaust fan is used to clear the room of bad odors, and more importantly, humidity so that mold and mildew don’t see your brand new bathroom as a beautiful living space! This also allows fresh air in so that you can actually see the mirror to get that nice, close nice shave. Lighting is also very important. Why is lighting important, you ask? It is especially important near your sink and often time’s turns out to be one of the best investments that you can make. Make sure there are no obstructions in the lighting, this way the mirror has a clear view of your face. Recessed light in the ceiling with a lens tends to be a great way to get plenty of light around your bathroom. Also, keep in mind dim lighting or night lights so that you and your family can find your way around a dark bathroom without flipping on the lights when your eyes are not adjusted.

We hope part 1 and 2 of this bathroom blog has helped shape and mold your bathroom a bit, and that you feel more comfortable committing to a design! We want to remind you that there are all ideas that you are not limited to, but there are also a plethora of others across the internet. Do your research, Fishkill Bathroom Remodelers!!!!
