2021 Trends That Will Reimagine Your Home

As we finally close the book on a year that has brought us no shortage of challenges, we look ahead to the new year and what trends it holds for our homes in 2021.

This past year has undoubtedly changed how we go about our lives, especially when it comes to living in our homes. The pandemic forced us inside, leaving many of us the opportunity to rethink, reevaluate, and reassess our spaces and how they function for our “new normal.” From color, to design, 2021 trends will inspire a much-needed change & fresh start that so many of us have been desperately craving.

Home Office/Workstation – We’d be remiss to not kickoff our 2021 trends list with home offices and designated workstations. Be honest, the thought of working from home in your sweats was at first was alluring. Now, maybe not so much. Home offices and workstations will be at the forefront of home design, with homeowners adding and renovating spaces that allow for concentration and clear separation from the rest of the home.  If you’re tight on space or an area isn’t readily available, fear not, as the “cloffice” (closet + office) has remedied this conundrum. Yes, when we tell you that 2020 had homeowners rethinking their spaces, we weren’t discounting closet space!

Houseplants – With this pandemic and no end in sight (at least anytime soon) homeowners are welcoming the joys of nature and the great outdoors, inside! Houseplants of all varieties are providing homeowners with their dose of wildlife and adding a bit of greenery to indoor landscapes. Houseplants help freshen the air, and serve as a mood booster, too! Don’t limit yourself to just plants, however, consider indoor editable gardens, with herbs & spices. For this trend, we recommend being mindful of placement, sun exposure, and level of maintenance.

 Rattan Light Fixtures

Rattan – Rattan pieces will be popular for 2021. Much like with houseplants, homeowners are favoring traditional outdoor materials inside. With its natural appeal and durability, rattan furniture and décor are versatile and adds warmth to a space. We recommend implementing it in strategic spots, however, such as headboards and light fixtures.

Partitions & Closed Floor Plans – If there’s any lesson 2020 has taught us, it’s the importance of privacy and having our own space. Homeowners quickly learned that having seamless sightlines may not be the best for Zoom meetings when your child’s in virtual gym class, or when your husband moseys his way over to the refrigerator for the 5th time. Though open concept living isn’t completely antiquated, expect to see more partitioned spaces this year and closed floor plans. The desire to have more privacy and designated areas for work & play has become a priority for fewer distractions and increased focus.

Touch-free Fixtures – 2020 inspired a cleaning trend like no one could have ever predicted (we’re still looking for cans of Lysol not priced at $50). With hygiene in mind, it’s also inspired homeowners to go touch-free with their fixtures, too. In 2021, expect to see a lot more touchless faucets and motion sensor Fixtures, both in kitchens and in bathrooms!

Bidets – Yep, bidets. The toilet paper shortage of 2020 has increased the popularity of bidets. Expect this 2021 trend to hold strong this year.

Pantones 2021 Colors of the year

Pantone’s Ultimate Gray & Illuminating yellow – Lastly, we cannot mention 2021 trends without mentioning Pantone’s Color(s) of the Year. Yes, that’s right, two colors for one trend. Leatrice Eiseman, the Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute stated “The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.”

So, while homeowners are working from home, expect to see many working on their homes, as well. From reimaged spaces, greenery, and touch-free technology, 2021 will be a year for home transformations!

Be on the lookout for these other popularly predicted trends for the year: Earth Tones, Plush/Cozy Fabrics, Zen Gardens & Zen Décor, and Zellige Tile
